It is caused by VMware tools, we were experiencing it on esx 5.5 with server2008 in multiple articles these are the steps I followed. 1. The solution proposes installing Update 1 to resolve but that is what I am already running.... You may resolve the problem by simplyuninstall/install vmtools but you must schedule VM guest restart at your convenience. Of course, my first inclination was to search the knowledge base and forums for anyone else that had/has this issue.  VMWare has posted KB Article 2036350 that provides a workaround to this his comment is here
